During breeding season these birds will range up to 800 kilometres from their breeding grounds (Such as Lord Howe Island) when foraging for food.

The birds we saw would likely be the ones that breed on Lord Howe Island as the other main Australian breeding ground is on the numerous islands off south-western Western Australia.
